How the URL Shortener Works

This tool creates real, working short links using the is.gd free API — no account, no tracking, no ads on your links.

01
Paste your long URL. Copy any URL — a blog post, product page, Google Doc, social profile, or anything else — and paste it into the input field. The tool validates that it's a proper URL before sending it to the shortener service.
02
Choose a custom alias (optional). Instead of a random string like is.gd/xKp3a, you can request a memorable alias like is.gd/my-brand. Custom aliases must be 5–30 characters using letters, numbers, and hyphens. If the alias is already taken, you'll be prompted to try another.
03
Hit Shorten. Your URL is sent to the is.gd API, which creates the short link and returns it instantly. The entire process takes under a second. No account, no email, no captcha.
04
Copy your link or scan the QR code. The shortened URL appears with a one-click copy button. A QR code is automatically generated so you can drop it into presentations, print materials, or anywhere you need a scannable link.
05
Your recent links are saved locally. The last 10 links you shorten are remembered in your browser session so you can quickly copy them again without re-shortening. They're never sent to any server — just kept in your browser's memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the short links expire?

Short links created through is.gd do not expire on a set schedule. However, is.gd reserves the right to remove links that violate their terms of service or that have been inactive for an extended period. For mission-critical links, consider using a dedicated link management service.

Can I use a custom alias that's already taken?

No — each alias on is.gd is unique. If your requested alias is already in use, you'll see an error and can try a different one. Adding numbers or hyphens to your preferred word is usually enough to find an available alias.

What URLs can I shorten?

Any publicly accessible URL starting with http:// or https:// can be shortened. is.gd blocks URLs that point to spam, malware, phishing, or other harmful content. Shortening already-shortened URLs also works fine.

Is this tool free? Are there limits?

Yes, completely free with no sign-up required. is.gd is a free public API with generous rate limits for personal and commercial use. For high-volume use cases (thousands of links per day), you may want to look into dedicated URL shortening services with API plans.
